Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can impact their health, but in fact indoor air pollution can also have significant and harmful health effects nowadays.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2 to 5 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, much higher than outdoor levels. These levels of indoor air pollutants are of particular concern as people spend a considerable amount of time indoors every day.
A poor IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) can lead to discomfort, ill-health (e.g. headache, itchy eyes, respiratory difficulties, skin irritation, nausea and fatigue), absenteeism, and lower productivity. These symptoms are mainly from air pollutants indoors, which mainly include VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), smoke, radon, nitrogen dioxide, lead particles, asbestos or other building materials, mould or mildew.
Asbestos or other building materials will also exhaust air pollutants into the air indoors, especially in the hot and damp indoor environment in Hong Kong. The high humidity can also nourish mould or mildew, which are quite harmful to children and the elderly, who are more sensitive.
